Cycle
route 3. A long distance route.
Through quiet
villages taking in Clumber Park, Sherwood and the Great Oak,
Laxton village and The Holocaust Centre. 43m
Starting
at South Leverton head south to Treswell. Turn left towards
Cottam and second right as you pass out of the village towards
Rampton. Continue South through the village towards Laneham,
where you turn right towards East Drayton. From here take the
road towards Retford, taking the turn left after a little
while towards Upton, Askham and onto East Markham, taking care
in crossing the A57.
Continuing
in the same direction brings you to the windmill at Tuxford
where you continue on through the village taking the road to
Egmanton. By the village green you will find the original
village prison with a single cell.
The
road dips now as the terrain becomes a little more varied
passing through Egmanton and on into Laxton. This village
still continues strip farming and there is a museum next to
the pub in the centre of the village.
Turn
right up the high street then toad lane before taking the
right fork to Ollerton. This takes you passed the Holocaust
centre before reaching the main A6075 and into the main town.
However almost immediately take the Newark Road on the left,
bringing you through to the A616 where you head straight over
along Rufford Lane passed the golf course and the holiday
village before emerging onto the A614. On your left is Rufford
Park. Head South along the A614 then take the first right
bringing you passed Centre Parcs and on through into
Edwinstowe, famed for its Robin Hood legends.
Head
North along Swincote Road and past the Robin Hood Visitor
Centre and site of the Great Oak. At the A616 head right then
immediately left and cross into the Thoresby Estate. Follow
the trak north to north-east then take the left fork taking
you around the East end of Thoresby Lake crossing further
upstream. Head directly north through the forest towards
Hardwick village to follow the way marked route turning right
to cross the A614 at the level crossing and cross into Cross
lane where you now cross the A1, with great care.
Now
follow brick yard road towards Retford taking the right turn
towards Eaton and across the A638 towards Headon and onto
Bottom Woodbeck and on to Treswell cycling back into South
Leverton on the road you originally started.
